This fused glass class teaches the art of creating up to four 4" x 4" glass coasters using a variety of transparent and opalescent glasses. Fused glass is a technique where pieces of glass are heated in a kiln at high temperatures to create a single, fused piece. You will assemble the pieces of glass in layers on top of a base piece of glass. These coasters will be fired at a full fuse, they will be smooth and glossy when they are finished in the kiln.
While working in this class you will learn how to prep the glass and cut it into shapes. Erin will show you how to create abstract designs, flowers, and other objects with glass pieces. You are encouraged to think about your design prior to class. You may bring pictures, stencils, or other objects as a reference for your creation. These stencils and pictures may be used as a guide for how you place the glass on the base layer.
You will have a variety of glass types and colors to choose from including transparent, opalescent frit, (small shards of glass), vitrigraph stringers (strings of glass pulled out of Erin’s home studio kiln) and a variety of larger glass pieces in a wide variety of colors.
You will learn how to use a strip cutter, glass cutter, and various small hand tools. The nature of glass, reactions between glasses, as well as how it reacts at different temperatures, and safety issues will be discussed. Participants will be required to wear safety glasses for the duration of the class, which will be supplied by Erin for you.
Once your designs are pieced together, Erin will take your creations home and fire them in her glass kiln. Small bumpers will be put on the corners of your coasters by Erin prior to your pickup date to protect the surfaces that they are placed on in your home.
(During class you will discuss a pick-up time – usually 7-10 days after the class).
