Create a mosaic on stone using ceramic and/or stained glass pieces. Use your final mosaic(s) for decoration or function (stepping stone). Anywhere you want to use it, it will add an interesting and natural component to your space and it will should last forever.
Learn to break the pieces in a safe way, and if you would like more controlled shapes, learn the basics of cutting pieces with hand tools. You'll learn to use adhesives to adhere your pieces to stone and how to grout. You will have the choice of using cement or a non-cement product and we'll discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each. There will be demonstrations and when you are finished, you will have the knowledge and experience to be able to make more at home.
Bring in 1-3 rocks of your choice - any size and shape. It can be flagstone, river rock... Everyone works at different speeds but there will probably be time to finish 2 or 3 pieces that are about 12"x12" each. Keep in mind that much of the stone can be left exposed (not covered by mosaic), and therefore your stone can be larger. Only bring in stones that you can carry yourself please and keep in mind that it will weigh more with the added cement and ceramic and/or glass pieces. Stones should be at least 5"x5". If you don't have rocks lying around your yard, talk to a worker at Pioneer Rock on Pinal Ave (in Casa Grande) and they usually will allow you to go their piles and hand-pick what you'd like to purchase.
Supplies:
- All supplies (other than your stone(s) are included.
- There will be plenty of decorative ceramic tiles, stained glass and old dishware to choose from. If you have something you'd like to bring from home you are welcome to (for example the lizard shown in one photo).
- Wear paint clothes and closed-toe shoes.
- If you have your own safety goggles please bring them (optional).
